SEE US ON FACEBOOK: PALM BAY PROFESSIONAL FIREFIGHTERS

TO OUR FRIENDS AND SUPPORTERS:

Thank you for taking the time to visit the public section of our web site.  Your Palm Bay firefighters need your help.  Contract negotiations between your firefighters and the City of Palm Bay have turned more than sour and have reached an impasse.  The city is looking to gut the very core of your firefighters benefit package and retirement plan.  In an effort to work with our city, your Firefighters offered a wage and longevity freeze, offered benefit concessions and made significant strides to reduce the amount of overtime in the Fire-Rescue Department.  This, on top of concessions your firefighters made in the areas of Health Insurance, Furlough Time, and Overtime calculations over the past two years that your firefighters did not have to make.  Your Palm Bay firefighters waived a Florida Statute that would have otherwise required our city to pay wage increases effective October 1, 2009, a tremendous savings to the city in and of itself.  Your Palm Bay Firefighters are reasonable people being treated unreasonably and unfairly by our city leaders.  Some of these leaders are placing your Palm Bay firefighters in a poor light within our community by spreading false accusations and half truths; all designed to degrade and break down your Palm Bay firefighters. At some point in this impasse process at a public hearing, your city leaders will resolve the impasse with your firefighters.  Some of your city leaders have stated they simply can not wait for this to occur, almost like our future is a game to them.  Morale inside our fire stations is poor to say the least, and some of your experienced firefighters are looking to leave.  Loosing experience is detrimental to a department that provides emergency service to the public however,  fear not as your firefighters remain dedicated to the job we are sworn to do, and that is to protect and serve and to respond and mitigate emergencies of all kinds, not just fires and we will perform the best we can with what we have despite this terrible attack on us.   We ask that you please contact our business office at 321-723-3036 to get the facts and to see how you can offer your help and assistance.

Thank you for your friendship and support.

Our organization represents the Firefighters within the Palm Bay Fire Department.  We represent the firefighters in labor matters with the City of Palm Bay.  Our views and opinions are not necessarily those of the Palm Bay Fire Department or of the City of Palm Bay.  While we represent the members in labor matters, we also are very involved in public activities.  We sponsor a wide variety of youth sports activities and other scholastic functions within Palm Bay's city limits;  we support the South Brevard Sharing Center with clothing and food drives at various times of the year; we hold an annual Boot Drive for Jerry's Kids and the Muscular Dystrophy Association; and we make a variety of donations throughout the year to local, state and national charities and fund raising events.  We appreciate the support our organization receives from the public.  We are your Palm Bay Firefighters.  Please contact us with questions related to our organization

FIREFIGHTERS WORKING WITHOUT CONTRACT

Oct 22, 2009 (14:46:36)

Effective October 1, the Palm Bay Firefighters began working under an expired collective bargaining agreement with the City of Palm Bay.  Both the Firefighters and City are working hard to come to terms on a sucsessor agreement.  Both sides feel an agreement will be reached.  The Palm Bay Professional Firefighters want the public to know that dispite word of mouth to the contrary in both public and private venues, your firefighters volunteered to freeze wages and longevity not just when the contract expired, but long before that....long before negotiations even opened back in May, your firefighters advised the city leaders that they would seek voluntary wage freezes, and would make concessions in some benefit areas.  We kept our promise and continue to offer a wage freeze and benefit concessions to the city. Still, usually during council meetings at periods of time when we can not speak or make rebuttal, at least one council member will speak of the greed; will speak of overpaid, and over benefited firefighters, who take take and take, but will not give back. Sometimes, this council member will speak of other city employee groups, but usually the firefighters will always enter into the bantor.

The Palm Bay Professional Firefighers want the public to know that we, along with the city are working towards agreement and the firefighters want to come to terms....acceptable terms that not only keep the current economic climate in mind for the city, but one that keeps the economic climate in mind of our own members and their families.
