AUGUST 2007

FUTURE SOCIAL EVENTS PLANNED
Updated: August 27, 2007
The Executive Board members discussed and approved a few social events for our members and families. Starting with the September Union Meeting, the local will provide wings at Beef O'Brady's on Babcock after the meeting. Also planned in the near future, most likely later in the fall when the weather cools we will have a family day at one of the local parks and combine it with a seafood boil of some type. We want to bring the local members back together with a little fun/good times away from the everyday hassle. We hope you enjoy what we have planned for you and will take your ideas and suggestions for next year.

CONTRACT RATIFIED BY CITY COUNCIL
Updated: August 27, 2007
On August 23, our Collective Bargaining Agreements were ratified by the City Council ending one of the longest periods of negotiation and turbulence in our local's history. Your pay raises take effect immediately and your retro pay should arrive in early October. The full contract can be found on the web site under the "Members" tab, and scroll to the Collective Bargaining Agreement section. Signed copies will be provided to each facility and the Executive Board will make personal copies for those members that request them.

CITY UNION LOCAL OFFICIALS SCHEDULE CANDIDATES FORUM
Updated: August 16, 2007
The 4 Local Unions within the City of Palm Bay have scheduled a joint Candidates Night Forum to be held September 10 at the American Legion Hall, Post 189 located on Veterans Drive, SE starting at 1800 hrs.  All Union members within the City are invited.  Please note that even though the forum is open to all City employees as well as the public, questions from the audience will not be allowed.  Prepared topics and questions will be answered by the candidates in a controlled and orderly fashion.  Our local members can send potential questions to your Executive Board and we will then add them to the questions posed by the other city union members.  The questions that are asked most will be the ones posed to the candidates.  The IAFF and FOP will shortly announce support for Donna Brooks, Seat 5, but that public announcement will not be made until after the closing period for City Council election.  Candidates who have responded to the invitation as of today are: Donna Brooks, Sybrina Anderson, Joe Pearce, Kristine Isnardi and William Capote.   None of the local unions within the city have yet to choose a candidate for Seat 4, which will not be made until after the forum.  Members who want to assist during the campaign season are welcome to contact the Executive Board.  We will need signs posted in your yards, and other assistance as the election draws near.  Our politics are extremely important to our jobs, benefits, and future.  Please help out when the time comes.

CONTRACT GOES TO COUNCIL, AUGUST 23
Updated: August 16, 2007
The most up to date information on your Collective Bargaining Agreement is that it is due for first reading at the City Council meeting to be held on August 23.  At this point it should fly through. We do not anticipate problems passing at the Council level.  The Rank and File Contract passed 99-6 while the Supervisors Contract passed 8-1 with 1 ballot disqualified. Once the contract has been ratified by City Council, your pay raises and benefits will take immediate effect.  You can expect your retro pay to show up in early October.

Chief Abraira will start as Palm Bay’s Fire Chief on September 10.  Chief Abraira has made the move to Palm Bay and is now settling in.  He has been kept informed on recent issues facing the department.  Chief has promised an interview for the web page with VP Ginsburg prior to starting.  The content of that interview will be posted just as soon as it happens.  Members are reminded of the retirement party for Chief Hellmann.  Details can be found in the “events section” of the web site or on your city email.
